Training Opportunities

East Cornwall CVS have received funding from the Learning and Skills Council to provide training for community and voluntary groups in Cornwall. The project involves a partnership of organisations that bring together a range of skills and experience, and together cover the whole of Cornwall.

Assessing Training Needs

As part of the LSC-funded project, East Cornwall CVS is supporting voluntary and community organisations with carrying out an audit of their organisational and employee training needs. A Workforce Development Plan is drawn up to help guide the organisations' training plans, and a Training Needs Analysis is created with individual employees and volunteers.

Training courses are then designed in response to the skills gaps identified through the Workforce Development Plans and Training Needs Analyses. East Cornwall CVS is working closely with the partner organisations to signpost individuals to appropriate training. In addition, a number of training courses are being delivered through East Cornwall CVS, which are shown in the 'Training Courses' section below.

The Workforce Development Plans and Training Needs Analyses are a tool to enable organisations and employees to evaluate their own needs, and reflect and review progress in meeting their needs.

"I found the Training Needs Analysis really useful for thinking through the type of training that I need to help me in my current job, and to progress my career".
Quote from VCO employee.

Training Courses

Forthcoming Training Courses
The aim is to boost the skills of voluntary and community sector employees and volunteers throughout Cornwall. Forthcoming training courses are listed below:

  • NOCN accredited Funding strategies and skills course - Bodmin June 2007.
Further NOCN accredited Community based training courses are planned for September 07, please check this website for further details nearer the time.

Keep an eye on this part of the website as new courses are regularly added!

Community Training Course
This course is designed for individuals who are new to community groups or projects, as well as for those who want to consolidate their experience in this area.

The course helps to build skills that are important for community work, looking at:

  • roles and responsibilities of committees
  • running effective meetings
  • understanding constitutions
  • fundraising techniques
  • promoting community projects

The course aims to build confidence as well as increasing knowledge and understanding of this subject area.

The Community Training Course is aimed at people who wish to brush up on literacy, numeracy or language skills, and is being delivered by Link into Learning. It is designed for people who are currently not in full time employment, and there is an opportunity to take a literacy or numeracy qualification as part of the course.

The course will run four times between April 2006 and September 2007. Future dates and locations are shown below:

Course 3 and Course 4 will take place in 2007. Watch this space for further details!
Location: Bodmin, venue to be confirmed

Training Networks

Building on the well-received Training Provider Networks that were established through East Cornwall CVS in Caradon, similar networks will be set up in all six districts in Cornwall.

The aim is to bring together training providers with organisations that signpost people to training, providing a forum for exchanging information and sharing good practice. It is hoped that the six monthly Training Network events will help to strengthen the sector and increase the number of individuals that access training.
