Our Accessibility

ECCVS is committed to ensuring that this site is fully accessible, not only due to legislation on the matter but also because it is the best practice to maximise the usefulness of the world wide web. It's for this reason that every decision we have made has been with accessibility in mind, both ensuring the website holds up to W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards and the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative).

Blind and Visually Impaired Users:
This site has been tested to ensure visually impaired users, blind users, and users that cannot utilise a mouse are able to navigate around without restriction or impedance. It has been tested with a variety of screen reading software and is created to look close to identical across all graphical web browsers. For blind users we suggest the use of programs that will read the website aloud, and recommend in the first instance the use of free software such as BrowseAloud

Users Without a Mouse:
We have decided not to implement Access Keys, given the low amount of links on each page using the TAB key to cycle through links (or shift+TAB to cycle backward) is a simple and accessible alternative to using a mouse. Access Keys are a great idea, however lack of standards amongst browsers can mean that using them at this time is not a viable option.

Using your Browser:
Each browser has its own way of allowing you, the user, to configure their own accessibility options (see AbilityNet link in Other Sources). Usually this can be done by disabling style sheets and applying your own colours and sizes to text. ECCVS fully recommends the use of the Opera browser for the best accessibility options, and for using a zoom function to allow you to make the website bigger without "breaking" the design.

Text Only:
We have implemented a text only version of this site that mimics exactly the content of the "graphical" version. The text only site operates with a larger standard text size in a bright yellow colour on a black background with white links. This high contrast approach is especially useful for those with visual impairment.
